It also attracted us because it is one of a growing number of hotels licenced to host Civil Ceremonies - we wanted everything to be as smooth and free-flowing as possible., and the idea of having everything in the one place was very attractive.
A week before the wedding, we were contacted by Ryan Walker, a manager of the Operations team, regarding small final details, and we agreed to meet with him the following night. What we expected to be a re-cap of arrangements turned out to be out to be a warm, hospitable, heart-to-heart. He walked and talked us through every minute of our wedding day, plying us with cappucinos and spending almost two hours with us. He assured me that as soon as my car arrived at the door, a well-oiled machine would kick into place, and that I need worry about nothing.
On my big day, that is just what happened. Ryan was there to greet me as my car pulled up; he was reassuring and warm, and told me he would round up our guests as pre-ceremony photos were being taken. Every step I took was observed and guided, and everything was timed to perfection. The hotel did us proud, with how they set out the room for the Civil Ceremony; soft lighting, flowers perfectly placed, ivory chair covers.
Ryan was a constant , low-key presence as the ceremony was proceeding. Afterwards, as we exited, he placed glasses of champagne in our hands, and set us up to meet and greet our guests. We were not left without guidance for a minute; Ryan arranged the photo shoot around the wedding cake; he gathered guests in for the meal, and set us up to make our big entrance into the dining room. To our astonishment, he had also arranged personalised menus for us, complete with a photo of us taken just after the ceremony!
The food is simply wonderful; we had heard, after we'd booked, that the City North had an excellent reputation for it's cuisine. We'd chosen steak and salmon for the mains; steak can be difficult to get right for large groups, but this was how steak should be..tender and lean cooked to perfection. The salmon was butter soft, all served with lashings of fresh veg, and lots of roast potatoes. Portions are generous - extremely so. Some of the steak-eaters were even offered seconds! As Bride and Groom, we were offered a bottle of champagne - on the house - with our meal. The service is incredible; these are staff trained to spot the turn of a head. No trying to get anyone's attention; they were attentive all day, and it was done with real smiles, real warmth.
It is not too difficult to get it right for weddings. What made it memorable was how personal it was; our dining tables were adorned with tea lights and flowers; the bridal table had a back-drop of fairy lights; everyone seemed to know our names...they didn't just put on a good show - they gave us magic.
We had the bridal suite, of course..the bed decorated with rose petals. magnificent views over East Meath and the coastline..and champagne for breakfast next morning. Ryan came down to talk to us, and modestly said that he was only a small part of a team who put it all together. We would unreservedly recommend the City North Hotel for a wedding. It looks quite boxy and uninspiring when viewed from the motorway, but when you walk inside, it is a wonderful, light-filled and comfortable space. Staff seem to like working there, and that says a lot about a place.
Our families were singing the praises of staff..there is very much a "can-do" air around.
An incident involving a small child enthusiastically turning on taps in a guest bedroom was dealt with. with no fuss, and no making the parents feel uncomfortable.
We have been back a couple of times since, they remembered us, and acknowledged us. Where would you get it?
