The Abbey: A Unique & Beautiful Exclusive Use Wedding Venue

There’s a new and exciting venue opening soon in 2021 in Kildare! Take a sneak peek at The Abbey Wedding and Events Venue.  The Abbey is Ireland’s newest exclusive use wedding venue, boasting period charm with a contemporary decorative twist. Yes, we said “Opening in 2021!” That means Friday and Saturday dates available in 2021 and 2022… You’ve got to take a look.

The Abbey is the first venue of its kind in Ireland and it will provide an elegant and unique backdrop for a wedding of any size up to 250 people. There has been a monastery on the site of The Abbey in Athy since the Dominican Order came from France to settle there in the 13th century. The history of the building tells of it having many different uses and occupiers, and of course, the layout of the building has evolved over time. In 2007 the building was converted into a four-star hotel and subsequently closed during the recession. The building lay empty for a number of years until the new owners began the loving restoration that you see today.

The Abbey Features a stunning 19th-century exterior

Today, The Abbey is an enchanting mix of ancient and modern. Carefully restored and painstakingly renovated, the designers engaged have set their hearts on a feeling of luxury heritage.

Each bedroom is filled with all the comforts of home.

There’s so many lovely aspects to this building but the piece de resistance is The Chapel.  It is a dramatic space encapsulated within the building and it dates from 1852. It features a stunning arched wooden ceiling and beautiful stained glass windows throughout, which light up the space as the sun shines in. There’s an incredible mosaic floor and the tiles are handmade by Craven Dunnill. Dating back to 1872 the flooring will be carefully restored in time for opening this year. The Chapel will have its own bar giving the flexibility to have the evening reception in this wonderful setting.

The chapel has been fully renovated and features beautiful stained-glass windows.

The opulent banquet room can host up to 250 guests but can be easily configured for smaller numbers. And, The Abbey extends to several other reception rooms, which lends to an intimate feel for you and your guests.  Muted moody tones, exposed plaster and lots of traditional features in the lounge and dining room make for a cosy feeling. Plans are afoot for a modern dining experience with delicious locally sourced food. The Garden Parlour leads outside to a private landscaped lavender-filled courtyard and gardens, perfect for drinks receptions.

The Abbey can host up to 90 people in their 38 bedrooms, including two impressive wedding suites. All rooms are newly renovated and offer all modern comforts. Each wedding suite has a super king size bed and a dedicated dressing lounge, and the Bridal suite has four vanity stations, a three-panel full length mirror and plenty of natural light. Each sleeps up to four people, so each bride or groom’s party can stay together the night before your nuptials.

The Abbey retains many elements of its historic past, including intricate wallpapers, the interior of the chapel, and antique wood finishes.
