Bridesmaids: What Are Their Duties?

Have you just been asked to be a dear friends bridesmaid and want to make sure you are aware of what is expected of you? Or perhaps you are a bride to-be and want to assure yourself that you are choosing the right ladies for the job. I can help! Whether you choose to have one or seven bridesmaids, the choice is yours, but make sure the chosen ladies are ones you trust entirely with the responsibility.

Your bridesmaids are not miracle workers and if things get delayed or go wrong during you wedding planning you can’t expect them to always have an answer. What you should expect from them though it to be there to listen and support you in any way they can. Here are some things that go with the bridesmaids duties, whether you are the Maid of Honour or not!

  • Wedding Venue – If the bride needs someone to go along with her to view a wedding venue, a bridesmaid should join her. Sometimes the bride and groom have different schedules which means they can’t always go to view every potential venue together.
  • Wedding Dress – Shopping to find ‘the’ dress! Some brides might prefer to have just the Maid of Honour join her during this task, but don’t worry she will share it with you all as soon as the choice has been made!
  • Seating Plan – Creating the seating plan can be a little stressful, this is something that the bride will more than likely need help with. Don’t be surprised if the groom has made his exit before it has even begun!
  • Dress Fittings – Make yourself available to attend dress fittings, especially those of the bridesmaids! Your bride will understand you also have your own life but do meet her half way and organise to be there on time for each of your fittings.
  • Hen Party – The hen party is one of the main tasks the bridesmaids should take care of. Make sure everything is organised ensuring the bride and her guests have a fabulous night, she deserves it!
  • Morning of the Wedding – Assist the bride as she gets ready on the morning of the wedding. Try to calm the nerves too if she is feeling a little anxious!
  • Train & Veil – Make sure the bride’s train and veil are fixed when she gets out of the wedding car and once again before she walks up the aisle. One of the bridesmaids will also need to hold her wedding bouquet.
  • Sign the Register – This is usually done by the Maid of Honour and the Best Man.
  • Mingle with the Guests – Make sure the guests are happy and occupied throughout the wedding reception. Don’t be afraid to be one of the first on the dance floor to get the party started! After each of you have shared a dance with the grooms men of course!

Being asked to be a bridesmaid for a friend of family members wedding is an honour and will be a fun and exciting role! You should offer the bride as much support and help as you possibly can. She has chosen you because she trusts you and your opinion to be part of one of the most special days of her life. Enjoy it, you never know when you might be asking her for the same favour in return!
