5 Things You Need To Know When Choosing Your Cake

Wedding cakes and dessert tables took center stage during 2016 thanks to a whole new level of emerging trends. From marble effect and colour drip, to geode cakes and everything in-between, we had a serious case of the munchies.

With our 2017/2018 brides-to-be in mind, we caught up with the super-talented Sheena of The Kerry Cake Company, who shared her expert tips on how to choose the perfect wedding cake.

Don’t Wait Until The Last Minute If You Are Ordering A Bespoke Cake

This is the biggest mistake couples make when designing their own wedding cake. Custom-made cakes are marked in the calendar months in advance. Special ingredients will need to be ordered and elaborate sugar work can mean that considerable experimentation is needed.

Be mindful that many small bakeries may only take one or two wedding cakes on any given weekend, so they can concentrate solely on these special projects.

Choose A Reputable Baker

This is so, so important. Research a variety of websites and social media channels. Their uploaded images will reveal a lot about their quality of work at previous weddings. Ask yourself the following questions before signing on the dotted line…

  • Are these images recent?
  • Are they varied in the techniques they can do?
  • Does the cost seem too good to be true?
  • Do they have a constant stream of positive feedback on their social media platforms and in reviews?

Allow Adequate Time

Once you have settled on your ideal colour scheme and wedding venue, your cake and dessert table will follow the same theme. Start getting organised at least three to six months prior to your date. This means it’s one less thing to worry about in the stressful run-up to the big day.

Love How It Tastes

Order a sample box or ask the potential supplier if they offer a cake tasting session. If you love the flavours you choose, chances are your guests will too. Try to avoid any exotic flavours that people may not have tried before. Majority wins in this case to ensure every crumb is devoured.

Be Inspired By The Latest Trends

If you are a serious fashionista, there’s no doubt you have been living on Pinterest since your other half popped the question! With endless inspiration, you can easily make a statement with something modern or opt for a more classically elegant creation.

Either way, your wedding cake decorator should be a trained professional. If they are not constantly training, then they cannot keep up-to-date with the latest trends. You need someone who can incorporate your cake into your theme by designing it around either your setting, venue, style of dress, colour scheme or flowers. They need to be able to focus on what you want and be able to 100% deliver it.

After finishing culinary arts in college, Sheena completed a Professional Masters Certificate in Cake Decorating, Royal Icing and Sugar Flower Techniques. She has traveled the UK doing various courses on key trends and she has worked with numerous cake makers to hone her skills. The Kerry Cake Company is currently running a special offer for all 2017 wedding couples – FREE delivery to Killarney.
