The camera flashes and I’m pretty much akin to a deer in the headlights. My passport photos and i.ds tell the very same story – I look terrified! Which is a real shame because I love photos and love the idea of them being our most accurate keepsake and description of people as we get older.
So since my life will be filled with memories and photos, I am making it my mission to overcome this strange fear of looking weird in photos (I may just have to embrace the weirdness!). Taking the advice from my esteemed photogenic colleagues, here is some advice on how to act natural in wedding photos:
Just The Two of us
Think about each other rather than being recorded. Weddings are all go on a huge emotional rollercoaster, so any reason to be alone together and remember why you’re doing this should be a nice breather for you – just forget that there is also a camera present!
Roll With it
Eventually you will realize that there is so much excitement to your day that you will be pretty much forced to forget someone is recording the day. As soon as you forget all of this, everything will come together!
Do your Research
When you choose a photographer, what matters the most is that you love their work. Take notes of examples of types of photos from them that you love. This will give them an idea of what you are looking for. Keep a Pinterest board and list of photos you definitely want to take on your day but try not restrict your photographer to these. He/she will have a creative side too and may be get inspired on the day!
Know You
Yes, you will find many sites with brides posing perfectly on bridal sites but if the ‘one-hand-on-hip-head-down-and-over-the-shoulder’ doesn’t do it for you then you need do what feels right to you. There are plenty of tips on smizing and tightening your jaw-line in photos (seriously – just look at celebs!) but if it doesn’t feel natural it will come across. Why not ask your photographer for tips and trust that they will edit out any unflattering photos!
