“She’s Stealing My Wedding!” Dealing With a Copycat Bride

“She’s Stealing My Wedding!” Dealing With a Copycat Bride

We’ve all been there at least once. A friend who loves your style/boyfriend/life. Suddenly, they’re acting like you, wearing the same clothes as you and getting a similar hair-do to you! Although it is a form of flattery, (this great post from Carol Woolton in Vogue mentions that is really an endearing experience in some ways) we have to say, when it comes something important to you, like a wedding it can be a little scary. If you are working hard to have a personal wedding or something different (which is what most people want), it can be pretty frustrating to see someone appropriate that. Here are some small, but helpful tips if you have a friend who may be a copycat bride.

Sharing on Social Media

Most brides are quite private when planning online (it can ruin a few surprises for guests to see it all unfold on Facebook!) but remember that you never know who has seen your online activity. Your likes, favourites and interactions on social media can be easily picked up too. Pinterest has private features that allow you to have “secret boards” now, which is great. If you have a bride stalker, it may be worth limiting your interactions with potential suppliers. It sounds a little harsh but it will give your copycat bride less fodder to work with. Instead, screenshot things you like on your phone or laptop and keep in an inspiration folder.

Select What you Share With Them

The internet is FULL of amazing tips and ideas for weddings! And you can still share inspiration with your fellow bride if you think it may suit their day. Share your favourite blogs, magazines and tips with them that you know you will never use at your own wedding. This will not only get the inspirational juices flowing in their mind, but may lead them on to totally different ideas to yours.

Call them out on it

Sometimes, honesty is the best policy. If your friend mentions that they may want to hire a supplier you are using, mention to them that others may think that she is copying you. It makes sense that friends will have similar tastes and naturally gravitate to the same idea. Just let them know that you are thinking about their day too. Remember that it’s hard to be 100% original when it comes to anything, and accepting this will give you that freedom to let loose.
