Throwback Thursday Liz Taylor and Conrad Hilton

Throwback Thursday

Happy Throwback Thursday everyone! We just love looking at vintage photos (our own or someone else’s!) so when we find some great photo’s we just have to share them with you! This week, the late Liz Taylor made the news again when her first wedding dress (one of many!) was sold for £121,875.

The wedding to Conrad Hilton took place on May 6th 1950, was the Hollywood ‘wedding of weddings’ and was the social event of the year with 700 guests including Gene Kelly, Fred Astarie, Esther Williams and Van Johnson to name a few!

A fresh faced, 18 year old Elizabeth Taylor wore the gown at a mere 20 inch waist but it has been taken out ever so slightly to fit a 22 inch waist. Her gown was a gift from MGM and was so extensive that more than 15 people were working on the project full time for 2 months. The gorgeous dress designed by Helen Rose, who had designed for other bridal icons such as Grace Kelly, a design that inspired the look for Sarah Burton’s design for Kate Middleton. Everything about this dress was designed with Liz Taylor’s voluptuous figure in mind. A built in corset that allowed the dress to be tightly pinched at the waist and a veil that was ten yards of silk net attached to a pearl covered juliet cap.
