Wedding guest photography is always an important element of the day. Most guests will want a great shot of the couple but may not always know how to go about it. That’s why we asked Wedding Photographer and Expert Elisha Clarke for some great tips on wedding guest photography!
Should I leave the flash on or off?
OFF! I would advise guests to check the settings on their cameras and make sure the flash is turned off. If the venue is bright, there is no need for flash. It is also important to be considerate of the hired photographer. They’re there to do the important task of capturing precious moments. It won’t help if your flash gets in the way of that or bleaches out their images 😉
How do I flatter the subject of the photo?
Knowing where the flattering light is, is important 😉 For example, you don’t shoot the subjects facing the sun! Imagine the squinty and bleached out faces as well as frowny expressions! Look out for shaded areas where the light is more even.
Really look at your subject and think about what you’re framing in the photo. Try to avoid anything in the background that may look like it’s sticking out of the heads and bodies of the couple etc.
Don’t be afraid to get close to your subject (ok, not uncomfortably close! ) It can make for a good composition and watch for moments where they might be laughing in conversation. They can make for great candids 🙂
Should I be worried about being in the way of other people’s photos?
I would say, be considerate of the fact. 😉 At most weddings, a lot of guests have cameras. This can be tricky for the professionals when it comes to taking family portraits as the family may get distracted and start looking at guest’s cameras. Be respectful and mindful of the hired photographer.
The same goes for the walking up and down the aisle photos. Refrain from blocking the aisle, this can look terrible in the professional photos!
Basically, be aware of your surroundings and what other people are doing and you’ll be fine 😉
What is good way to capture a fun photo?
It always helps when people are up for a laugh and naturally fun loving. Having a few messers about can aid in the giggles! Sometimes I just act the fool and say something stupid to get people laughing 😉 Sometimes the bridal party will have their own signature poses they want to rock out. Just don’t be afraid to have a laugh and make fun of yourself.
