While wedding cake alternatives may be making their mark in the world of weddings, I can never see the wedding cake making an exit from the scene. Wedding couples are experimenting by having pie tables, ice cream stands and pancake stations at their wedding reception. Yet most are actually also choosing to have the traditional wedding cake. Will it ever be beaten? I think not! As someone once said (don’t ask me who), a party without a cake is just a meeting.
When choosing your wedding cake the first thing you should decide upon is the flavours you are going to choose, schedule a cake tasting with your supplier (who doesn’t want to eat cake all afternoon). It is always a good idea to go for a number of different flavours if you have having a tiered cake, that way there will be a flavour that you and each oen of your guests will enjoy!
Here are my Top 10 Wedding Cake Flavours:
10. Fruit Cake
A fruit cake usually filled with fruit cake with juicy raisins, sultanas, currants, apricots, cherries, dates and prunes soaked in brandy for several days before being slow cooked. It is then left to mature for up to 3 months allowing the brandy to soak in.
9. Carrott Cake
A moist carrot cake filled with delicious buttercream always goes down a treat! The pecan nuts give this cake that added crunch.
8. Coconut & Lime
Ideal if you are looking for something a little different. It is made with delicious coconut cream, shredded coconut and lime flavoured buttercream.
7. Rainbow Cake
Having a colourful wedding theme? This is the cake for you! Make up of 7 thin layers each featuring a colour from the rainbow sandwiched between vanilla buttercream. Your guests will get a surprise when you cut into this gem!
6. Lemon Cake
A great zesty option, ideal for summer weddings! This light cake is made with fresh lemons and filled with lemon curd buttercream. Your guests will still be left with some room to try others!
5. Red Velvet
The famous red coloured chocolate cake which is layered with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream and covered in the all important red crumb!
4. Chocolate Fudge Cake
Who doesn’t love chocolate cake? Especially if it is chocolate fudge! This one is truly rich so make sure you keep enough room, and be careful of that white dress!
3. Victoria Sponge
This classic never fails! Your guests will enjoy this choice after their meal along with a cup of tea. Vanilla sponge filled with vanilla buttercream and strawberry preserve. Delish!
2. Raspberry & White Chocolate
One of my favourites! The white chocolate sponge with raspberries throughout is then layered with raspberry buttercream and white chocolate ganache. Your guests won’t be able to get enough!
1. Chocolate Biscuit Cake
A must if you ask me. Easy to serve and delicious, what more could you want! Make with the finest dark chocolate this choice always proves to be a hit. Even better it lasts up to 2 weeks in the fridge, if you are lucky to have left overs!
