So you’ve bought the dress… Now you just have to bring it home! Here are some tips for travelling with your wedding dress.
Let The Professionals Help
On the last fitting you have, bring a suitcase. Ask your shop assistants to help with packing. These are the people who are constantly packing and unpacking dresses for brides – they will know what they are doing!
Contact Your Airline
If you are flying with your dress, it will be worth contacting your airline beforehand to find out what they will let you carry on with you. If you ask nicely, they may even stow it away in a staff closet. Some airlines may be very strict regardless and might even ask you to pack it in your luggage.
Consider Insurance
Travelling with your dress is just another reason to consider insurance. Weddings are costly and really an investment (no surprise there) so when something goes wrong it can really be a huge setback. The one advantage to insurance is that you are covered if something goes wrong. Of course, you will need to see what falls under your claims but it is worth considering if you are unsure.
Shipping
Shipping your dress may be a worthwhile alternative to traveling with a big gown. If you can try the dress on in a store but order it online, all the better. Some boutiques may even offer a shipping service. Again, this is also where insurance comes in handy and depending on if you are posting it to yourself or ordering it, this is something you can also take out just for your package.
Have Your Dress Steamed
Once you have brought your dress home, you will probably find that it’s pretty wrinkled (which is understandable). Before your big day, it’s always a good idea to have your dress steamed by a reputable company. If you really just need to have one or two creases straightened out, steaming it yourself is quite easy (even without a steamer). Simply hang your dress up in your shower room, making positively sure your dress is not touching anything else and turn on your shower. As the steam from your shower rises, it will lift any creases. Be extremely careful with this and if your dress is satin or silk, don’t take the risk and have it cleaned by a professional.
