The Beginning
“We are a young couple from Longford, Ireland. I am 22 years old and Darragh is 25 years old and several people said it as soon as we decided to get married ‘Oh you’re so young’ but we were together 8 years the day before we got married and we could see no possible reason to wait any longer. We met when I was 14 years old and Darragh was 16 at an underage disco in Cavan, I’m embarrassed to admit that I was the one that made the first move and I added him on Facebook the following day and texted him first, it’s something I very rarely admit, but now I’m glad I did. He asked me to be his girlfriend on the 26th of April 2011.”
The Proposal
“It was the 25th of December 2016, Christmas Day. I was in my home house and every Christmas morning we go to visit my granny. A couple of weeks previous Darragh had asked my parents for their blessing and he had arranged with them to come to my house when we left for my granny’s. When we left Darragh came to my house and put rose petals on the bed saying will you marry me with flowers and balloons all over the room and he was down on one knee on the floor when I came back home. All very secretive for several weeks beforehand but definitely a surprise to remember for a lifetime. It was lovely to have my parents involved also.”
Wedding Attire
“I bought my wedding dress in Simone’s in Sligo. It certainly wasn’t something I could have imagined myself in and the reason I chose it was because Darragh has previously mentioned that he really liked that kind of dress and the second I put it on I fell in love! It made me feel a million dollars and knowing Darragh loved it made it even better. It was a fitted ivory dress with lace and sequence with long sleeves and a high neck, the back was out with button detail and I wore a cathedral length veil with a lace trim. Irregular choice shoes were my go-to as I’m not the best in high shoes but as the reception began after the photographs, I quickly changed into a pair of converse.”
The Venue
“We decided to have our wedding reception in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel in Athlone as it’s an absolutely fabulous hotel. The location is perfect its outside of Athlone so you have that privacy and an intimate feel but its close enough for people to travel to and its easily got to. The hotel itself is gorgeous with a picturesque driveway to the hotel with beautiful gardens for fabulous photo opportunities. The hotel is family run and you deal directly with the managers Paddy and Alan and the wonderful wedding coordinator Mary, From the beginning when we went to book the hotel nothing was ever an issue, no task was too big or too small and they put everything they possibly could in to making our day so special.
From day one we said that we wanted our guests to have an enjoyable experience and to feel at home, the way all the staff in the hotel treated our guests was second to none. The food was delicious with people still talking about it now several weeks later. I loved how they wanted our day to be as special as we did and were willing to do anything necessary to make that happen. For us the wow factor was the way they had the drinks reception room and the ballroom decorated and set up, it was just beautiful and were so grateful for the effort that they put in.”
The Photographer
“We booked Fotoviliam, Viliam and his wife Bibiana Revtakova are an absolute pleasure to work with. The shots that they got on the day are breath-taking. They worked around us throughout the day and we didn’t feel under pressure at all. They didn’t request much time for photographs and when they did, they made it a really fun and enjoyable experience with lots of laughs which we felt was very important.”
Trends & Themes
“We went for a traditional wedding really with a few extras added here and there. We had a donut wall that held 300 different flavour donuts from Ray in 808 Donuts in Dublin, a prosecco wall with an attendant that made cocktails from Fab Functions Ireland and a table plan in wine barrels and each table plan was on a wine bottle from Paul in Table Plan Designs. Everything else was pretty traditional in regards to table and chair covers were ivory with the fairy light backdrop and skirting on the top table, a LED dancefloor and love letters, candelabras as centrepieces and of course a selfie mirror from Carolyns Sweets all of which went down a massive treat with ourselves and the guests.”
Memorable Moments
“Besides marrying my best friend, we both agree that the most memorable and special moment was after the meal when the manager Alan made an announcement that my father had a surprise for us and that all guests should go outside, at that stage I was very nervous wondering what was happening and as we went outside a firework display began. My father had arranged with a company to travel to the reception as a surprise for us and without a doubt it was something we will never forget.”
Bridal Advice
“Enjoy Every Second, it fly’s by and I recommend everyone to get a videographer to capture every moment.”
